Union forces had taken Chattanooga, prized as a gateway to the deep south. Union forces were later defeated in the Battle of Chickamauga and placed under siege in the town of Chattanooga for two months. With the arrival of reinforcements, the Union Army broke out by driving the Confederates from positions surrounding the town of Chattanooga.
