Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park commemorates the Civil War campaign for control of Chattanooga, prized by the Union as the gateway to the Deep South. The Union army was defeated in the battle of Chickamauga on September 18-20, 1863, but with the arrival of reinforcements, the Union army broke out by driving the confederates from positions surrounding Chattanooga on November 23-25, 1863.
