During the Vietnam conflict, the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia recognized the need for a symbol. In 1972, the POW/MIA flag was designed by Newt Heisley and quickly gained widespread acceptance. To date, the POW/MIA flag is the only flag, besides the American flag, to have flown at the White House.
